Paul DiAnno: "Iron Maiden is only marketing"

on June 12, 2006 @ 11:49

During your show you played your solo albums songs, but the prominence was the songs that you made when you were on Iron Maiden. What do you feel when you play them?

This question is very funny because I saw a lot of thrilled people when I played Remember Tomorrow, and I feel a lot of energy, happiness, because this song brings me remembrance. And I wrote it for my grandfather, when I was in Iron Maiden. I feel different when I sing this song. I remember him. But it wasn´t the same when I was in Iron Maiden.

How was it playing with Brazilian musicians? Have you rehearsed a lot?

I already knew the guys before, we played toguether last year. And last Wednesday we´d played for one hour. But it doesn´t matter because they understand the song, and that is the most important thing. It´s necessary to have emotion to play, to feel the song, to know using the heart. This is better than rehearsing a lot.

It´s inevitable to talk about Paul without talking about Iron Maiden. Would you talk to us a little about your old band? Can you compare the band before and after your era?

Don´t ask me that! I can´t compare! This band was pure energy when it started, something different of nowadays. We can separate it in two different stages. The first one when I was the singer, Iron Maiden was a band that had dreams, we played for plasure to be united doing what we loved, that was real! Now I don´t listen the albums, they´re cold, it´s just “show business”, they only think about money and marketing! If they would depend on me Iron Maiden would finish, the band has no value anymore, and I can tell you more, if the band would do the last show and if I was the producer, I would charge ten million dollars and would donate it all to UNICEF! Everything for the children!

And what about your new album released on USA, Japan and Europe, but not in Brazil, what could you say about?

The CD / DVD was released arround the world, but it´s an american company and they have this american way, so they didn´t release it here because they didn´t find a producing company working on the american way. I like this album so much because it was made with a lot of passion; I could play three more songs from this last album but the show was very short so I couldn´t.

Brazil has a lot of bands that the inspiration came from the Heavy Metal that you assisted to create. Is there a band here on wich you like to listen the songs?

I like Sepultura so much, they´re all my friends and that´s a fucking great band! I also like Massacration (a fun comedian heavy metal band), they´re so funny doing that screamings. There are others but I can´t remember their names. That band… called… Angra… this is so bad (ill)! That´s really a shit band! If I had to play with them to survive I would die! Other bands I didn´t listen yet. Oh, you have Viper wich is so great, although, they´re a little more pop now, but still very good.

You have been here many times, what do you like the most?

I like the women, my ex-wife is Brazilian. I have my children living here, consequently sometimes I´m coming here. Besides, I love my team, Corinthians (actual Brazilian champion where Argentinean player Carlitos Tevez plays) on wich my brother Alex cheers too. We´re always going on Corinthians games… when we can!

I think it has some sad truths inside here, but we still love this band with such devotation, because in a way (that we all know), it is a honest band.....everything in life is not as we would wanted to be, right ? same our groups, but after all, if we stay fans, as of me some 20 years, well........no reasoning, no more to say!....as of paul, his truth is a half truth, as it lacks of self-jugement, maiden pay attention to what to say, they don't say easy words like paul !! (exept maybe big-mouth-bruce, but an ancient god like Bruce, he is not perfect but he has his blemishes)!!_____no5

Well, technically he can talk about Maiden like that, it's a free country ;). But Paul's really all talk. He's really just bitter at getting kicked out, as dogigniter said, and I think labelling Maiden's music as 'marketing' demeans them-if Maiden are all about the money now, then the entire music industry must be screwed :p

i always find it fun that when maiden or paul are busy trying to raise their profile, Di'anno is always "maiden are shit now" but when he appears on anything officially maiden (autobiography, early days) hes always singing there praises. now whos doing it for showbusiness?
